Due to the recent coronavirus outbreak, many of us have been advised to work from home to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Even though for many people working from the comfort of your home is a dream come true, the truth is, for some, it can be quite the opposite. Staying productive while you know there is a pile of laundry waiting for you or when you suddenly feel like binge-watching your favourite Netflix series, can be quite hard.

To help you make the most of working from home, we’ve listed a few things you can do to stay productive and actually enjoy it too.

Get out of your pyjamas

When working in an office environment, your daily commute to work can help you feel ready to start work by the time you sit behind your desk. However, when working from home the transition from your bed straight to your computer can be quite a struggle. The key thing when working from home is to wake up early.

Start the day as if you’re going to the office. For example, you can mentally prepare yourself by taking a hot shower, getting dressed and having your usual breakfast.

Doing this will not only help you be more productive. Working at home often calls for unexpected video calls that you’ll certainly be ready for.

Create a dedicated workspace

If you live in a small apartment, chances are you might not have an office space. So understandably, it might be tempting to rather get work done in bed or laid back on the couch. However, in order to stay productive, it’s super important to create your dedicated workspace. If you can transform a small corner in your house into a mini office, go for it!

Also, make sure that you invest in a decent office chair that will help support your back. It’s important to remember that your comfort is crucial too.

Take regular breaks

When working from home, chances are you might be glued to your screen for hours in the hope of getting work done. However, research shows that in order to stay productive, it’s more beneficial to take short breaks, than less frequent longer breaks. In an office setting, this tends to be easier. Especially, as you’re able to interact or have a quick chat with your colleagues.

However, just because you’re working from home, doesn’t mean you should stop yourself from having the well-deserved break you need.

Create a conducive environment

Although working from home can for some quickly become boring, it really doesn’t have to be. Spend some time figuring out what will help you create a conducive and productive work environment. For example, some people work really well in silence. Others are and feel at their best when they have their favourite radio station playing in the background. For this reason, it’s essential to figure out what works best for you.

Also, you might not realise it, but your space often influences your mood too. Doing the simplest things such as making sure, you have enough light coming into the room to keeping your workspace clear and clean can make a huge difference.
