1. Conduct Company Research
Conducting thorough company research is one of the most important things if you want to nail that job interview. It’s really not a good look if you are applying for a job position at a company you really do not know anything about. And of course, you don’t have to know the company inside out. However, it’s important to show genuine interest in the business and in both their recent and current events.
2. Know Your Resume
There is no doubt that the interviewers will be asking you questions about your previous work experiences. Therefore, make sure you know your resume by heart. And this may sound self-evident, however, if it is the first time in a long time that you are back on the job hunt, some experiences or projects might have actually slipped your mind. So make sure you fully prepare by knowing every detail on your resume inside out.
3. Analyse the Job Description
Never go to a job interview not being fully aware of the job description. In order to convince the interviewers that you are the perfect candidate for the job role, you need to prove that you thick all the boxes on their list (or at least most of it). Also, interviewers might ask you questions like “What do you like the most about this role”? and “What do you hope to gain from this role?” – It’s very important that you are able to answer these questions ‘concerning the job role’ sufficiently.
4. Give concrete examples
When talking about your previous work experiences, achievements or skills, always make sure that you give concrete examples – For example, just mentioning that you are a ‘hard-working’ individual is not enough. What proves or shows that you are hard working? If you have a specific skill which is key to the job role, giving concrete examples and clear illustrations will make you stand out amongst other candidates.
5. Be Your Authentic Self
Most importantly, always be your ‘real’ self. Be as open and transparent as you can. It is easy to forget that the interviewers are human too. Good news! We all have flaws, we all make mistakes and we all try to learn from them. So for example, when asked about your ‘strengths’ and ‘weaknesses’, do not overpraise yourself but also don’t bring yourself down. Always talk in terms of self-development and the steps you are taking to continuously improve yourself.
In order to not only land the job but also maintain and keep the job, you need to have the room to be yourself. That’s the only way you will actually be able to perform and own your new job role.
